A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.
When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.
Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.
Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I'm going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal's office.
Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.
And that — that, I know how to do.
This book just made me so freaking happy. Have you ever read a book that just made you smile from ear to ear from beginning to end? Yes, there were difficult times in this book. Yes, there were moments of sadness and frustration and profound loss. But this story is so overwhelmingly hopeful and joyful and funny. This is the kind of story you should read when you need a pick me up, when you need to feel good about life and love, when you just want to laugh.

Emma Chase has proven time and time again that she is a master at telling a story from inside the male mind. It never gets old, it never gets redundant, it never feels overdone. But she upped her game with Sustained. This book reads entirely from the perspective of Jake Becker, a large and in charge attorney who loves women and sex and his job. Ok, we've been there with Drew Evans and Stanton Shaw. Fine. All noncommittal womanizers who love their jobs and avoid relationships at all costs until that one special someone comes along and begs that they reevaluate their lives. But Sustained breaks the mold by throwing a young, beautiful woman into the mix who is the legal guardian over six young children. Of course Jake Becker isn't just repulsed by relationships.... he's repulsed by kids too. What could go wrong? It's one thing watching and hearing and seeing and feeling Jake's growing attraction to Chelsea McQuaid, it's an entirely different bag watching him navigate the very uncharted waters of dealing with six rambunctious, perfectly awful children.

The antics that surround one bachelor attorney, the object of his affection, and the six children that have been left under her care in the wake of their parents' deaths are everything from completely heartwarming, to piss your pants hilarious to downright heartbreaking. True, the circumstances that have brought these people into each other's lives are tragic. And true, it all feels very precarious. I consistently wondered who'd break first under the pressure, letting this house of cards come crumbling down. But in the meantime, this bizarre dynamic, this unconventional family of sorts had me bent over with laughter, had my heart soaring with joy. Their banter, their trials, the drama that plagues them was so perfectly plotted out. I was completely consumed with this book.

Emma Chase is such a smart writer. She digs deeper than most writers do into her characters personalities, their thoughts, those details that separate them from everyone else and then she delivers them to the reader so in such a way that there's no stone left unturned. She personally introduces you to the psyche of her characters. She makes you look at life, at people, at even the most mundane things in a way you never did before. She's a genius at characterization. At dialogue. At humor. At romance. At sex. At storytelling. Pure genius. Period.

I loved this book hard. I loved the way it hurt so good. I loved the way it made me laugh and made my heart feel so damn full. I toss around words like "unputdownable" and "unforgettable" a lot but books like this one, like Sustained, give words like those new meaning. I devoured this book. Heartwarming, intensely emotional, deliciously sexy, and downright hilarious, Sustained is one of my favorite books this year!

Jessica's Rating:

By day, Emma Chase is a devoted wife and mother of two who resides in a small, rural town in New Jersey. By night she is a keyboard crusader, toiling away the hours to bring her colorful characters and their endless antics to life. She has a long standing love/hate relationship with caffeine.

Emma is an avid reader. Before her children were born she was known to consume whole books in a single day. Writing has also always been a passion and with the 2013 release of her debut romantic comedy, Tangled, the ability to now call herself an author is nothing less than a dream come true.
