SYNOPSIS:
Finn
No matter how cruel it’s been in the past, I’ve never been able to flip fate the bird. I’m a romantic at heart. So when fate drops a leather-bound journal at my feet, I know I should walk away.
I don't. I pick her up, bend her spine, spread her pages. From the first word, I’m a goner. The owner didn’t give me access to her most intimate desires, but I devour them anyway. Her private darkness, her candid, explicit poetry—it all goes down like warm milk. And from that point forward, I drink, eat, and sleep her.
Halston
I went to his apartment and let him take my picture. Just once, to see how it would feel. I’m not his to look at, to inspire, to touch, but when he watches me through his lens, it gives me a high I don’t want to come down from…
My journal is the one place I can be myself—as long as I can tie it up and put it away when I’m finished. But when Finn undoes the bow, he pulls strings that could unravel each of us.
PURCHASE HERE:

I board the elevator to my floor, where Halston’s waiting. The way she looked up at me from the bed earlier, eyes wide, cheeks pink, lips parted, is what it means to be a man. Her man—finally. I’ve been aching for this since I opened her journal.

I enter my apartment and head straight for the bedroom. The shower is on. Perfect, since I plan on doing dirty things to her.

I stop at my nightstand for a condom, nearly breaking off the handle when I yank the drawer open, peel off my t-shirt, and step out of my sweats on my way to the bathroom.

Halston turns quickly, covering her breasts. “Finn? What—”

I tear the condom packet open with my teeth. “I told you to be ready for me.”

She keeps her hands where they are. “I’ll only be another minute.”

“I can’t wait that long.” I strip off my underwear and start rolling on the condom.

“I’m not ready,” she says. “I thought you’d be longer.”

I open the door, and she backs into a corner.

“I have no makeup on, my hair’s all tangled—”

I step into the shower, shaking out my mop when water beats it down, and close in. “This is exactly how I want you,” I say when I’m standing over her. “Stripped down to nothing. Nowhere to hide.”

Her smooth, white throat ripples when she swallows. Her eyes are huge and gray. Any fog from the night I met her is gone. She’s open right now. For so long, I’ve just wanted to connect with someone. Not someone—the one. And now, she’s here—soaking wet, looking a bit petrified—but here. I forget about the last ten minutes downstairs. Those minutes, months, years of making mistakes? They were leading me to this, my girl. I can’t be mad about that. I can only be happy and grateful to finally have her. Not to mention horny as fuck to finally claim her. “I want you raw. Just you and me, Halston. Nothing else.”

She drops her hands, and I take her face in mine. I kiss her so hard, she squeaks. Her back is glued to the tile, but I can’t seem to slow down. I grope her breasts, squeeze her ass to bring her even closer. I shouldn’t fuck her right off the bat. I shouldn’t. I can’t wait, though. I’ll take my time later. I hook my hand under her left knee and lift her leg until her thigh is pressed against her breast. Reluctantly, I stop kissing her, but I don’t move a millimeter from her mouth. “Want me to slow down?”

“No.”

I line my dick up with her opening and thrust halfway in. She sucks in a breath. “How about now?” I ask.

She squeezes her eyes shut and shakes her head. I need to be all the way in, rooted to the base of my cock. But I enlist all my patience and stay where I am while she adjusts to my size. I’m big, and I might’ve guessed she’d be this tight. “Look at me.”

She opens her eyes, and they’re full of fire. “Do it,” she says.

“Do what?” I urge. I want to hear her.

Her voice wavers adorably when she says it, even though I can tell she’s trying to sound confident. “Fuck me.”

I squeeze her leg, lifting it even higher so she inhales sharply. “I changed my mind,” I say, easing into her inch by inch. “I want you to feel as tortured as I am.”

“I do,” she rushes out. “I’ve wanted this as much as you. More.”

“I don’t believe you. When we met, you barely noticed me.”

“That’s not true,” she says. “I thought you were sexy. I didn’t think . . . someone like you’d be interested in me.”

“And now?” I ask, licking my lips. When I’ve sunk as deep as I can get, I thrust my hips once, ramming her against the wall. “Think I’m interested now?”

REVIEW: THE PAWN BY SKYE WARREN <<--- DARK AND TWISTY! SO GOOD!!!!

Title: The Pawn
Series: Bk #1 - Endgame Series
Author: Skye Warren
Release Date: December 7, 2016!
PURCHASE HERE:

SYNOPSIS:
"Sinfully sexy and darkly beautiful, The Pawn will play games with your heart and leave you craving more!" - Laura Kaye, New York Times bestselling author
The price of survival...
Gabriel Miller swept into my life like a storm. He tore down my father with cold retribution, leaving him penniless in a hospital bed. I quit my private all-girl's college to take care of the only family I have left.
There's one way to save our house, one thing I have left of value.
My virginity.
A forbidden auction...
Gabriel appears at every turn. He seems to take pleasure in watching me fall. Other times he's the only kindness in a brutal underworld.
Except he's playing a deeper game than I know. Every move brings us together, every secret rips us apart. And when the final piece is played, only one of us can be left standing.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
THE PAWN is a full-length contemporary novel from New York Times bestselling author Skye Warren about revenge and seduction in the game of love. It's the first book in the brand new ENDGAME series.
PURCHASE HERE:
"Move into jeopardy. Be captured. So simple and yet so hard to do. Surrender."

The Pawn is a darkly intoxicating story of a young woman who sells her body and her soul to the highest bidder in order to save the only surviving remnant of her former life and the man who comes to own her. A calculated game of wits and maneuvers ensues within these pages, a dark battle for control and surrender takes place. And in this dangerous game of give and take, of fear and lust, each move of the pawn and the king reveal bits of strategy, of secrets, of desire, of truth.

"In chess we’re well matched. I still lost, sacrificing the game to get information that broke my heart. But when it comes to sex, he’s the far superior player. I’m a novice. I’m nothing."

Like every Skye Warren book I've ever read, I couldn't put The Pawn down. Skye Warren knows how to create that razor sharp line between love and hate for her readers, taking them on a deliciously dark ride through pleasure and pain, often tangling the two so intricately, the reader is unsure which they're even feeling at any given moment. That's the same tumultuous journey Avery James is taken on with the man who buys her, the king who owns her. This book hurts so good in a way that only this author's books do. The sensuality in these pages is perfectly yet painfully laced with terror and heartbreak, with uncertainty and fear, that the reader, right along with these characters, is left consumed by everything they're made to feel.

"It’s my role in this game: to fall when the time is right, to protect the king until I’ve run out of time. To sacrifice myself at the perfect turn."

This author is brilliant. A uniquely smart writer, a captivating storyteller, there's no other way to describe Skye Warren than brilliant. Unsurprisingly, there's nothing straight forward about this storyline. It's intense, it's complex. It's completely unpredictable. This story of sex and lust is so exquisitely woven together with the game of chess, with the game of seduction, with the game of lies and deceit. It's a masterful, emotional labyrinth rife with pleasure, pain and heartbreak. The Pawn is a ruthless barrage of emotions you'll both love and hate to feel all at once. And this is just the beginning...

Jessica's Rating:
Skye Warren is the New York Times bestselling author of contemporary romance such as the Chicago Underground series. Her books have been featured in Jezebel, Buzzfeed, USA Today Happily Ever After, Glamour, and Elle Magazine. She makes her home in Texas with her loving family, two sweet dogs, and one evil cat.

REVIEW + EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY: GOING UNDER BY LEXI RYAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Title: Going Under
Series: The Blackhawk Boys #3
Author: Lexi Ryan
Release Date: December 6, 2016
PURCHASE HERE:

SYNOPSIS:
If I met Alexandra DeLuca for the first time today, I would only need one word to describe her:
MINE.
She's everything she was when we said goodbye. Beautiful, stubborn, sweet...and off-limits.
After two years leading separate lives, our worlds have collided. Now that she's back home working and taking classes beside me, she's bound to make me lose my mind.
She's all I've ever wanted, all I've ever dreamed of, and the one thing I can never have.
Not because she's my best friend's sister.
Not because all four DeLuca brothers would come at me with fists swinging if I hurt her.
Not even because she's way better than I will ever deserve.
I keep my distance because we didn't meet for the first time today. We met five years ago when I was a different person. When my demons ruled me. Even though I've changed--even though I've gotten my life together and become a better man--I can't change the past. And the secrets that haunt me would destroy her.
But I'm not the only one with secrets, and when the truth comes out, I don't know where to turn. What do you do when your world washes away beneath your feet and you feel like you're drowning? What do you do when the woman you promised yourself you'd never touch is the only thing that can keep you from going under?
GOING UNDER is a standalone novel and the third set in the world of The Blackhawk Boys series.
Football. Secrets. Lies. Passion. These boys don’t play fair. Which Blackhawk Boy will steal your heart?
PURCHASE HERE:
"We break, and we heal. Our scars can make us more beautiful than we were before."

Going Under feels like a runaway train, a sinking ship. You can feel the intensity growing with every turn of the page. You know you're headed somewhere you REALLY do not want to go. You know the impact is going to kill you, and yet you hang on and hold out hope because you simply can not look away, because the ride feels too damn good. I read this story with knots in my stomach. I had such a visceral reaction to everything Lexi Ryan was throwing at me. I both loved and hated every bit of it. This story hurts. I can't remember the last time I read a story where I just kept thinking "No! Please, please, just NO." the entire time. But that's what happened here. There are hints dropped. There are secrets unearthed bit by bit as the story evolves, and with each glimpse into the truth, my heart rebelled. I didn't want the truth to be the truth. This time, I preferred the lies.

"I want to brush my fingers over that space where demons I know too well reached beyond their boundaries and caught an innocent."

I LOVE every single book in this series. Love. I think, with each new book, I fall even harder in love with this author's writing, with her storytelling, with these characters. Ryan's writing is stunning, her words just gut me. And these stories are nothing short of intoxicating. I just get lost. Each standalone is better than the last, more intense, more emotional, more gripping. And wow, Going Under might be the best one yet. From the first page, I was hooked. I love the forbidden nature of a girl falling for her brother's best friend, a friend that respects boundaries and refuses to ever go there with his friend's younger sister, despite his obvious affection for her. I was ready for that storyline, excited for it. The prologue, the first few chapters, I was addicted. I was over the moon with the push and pull of their attraction, with the knowledge of what once was and what will never be. I was addicted to this new dynamic created by Alexandra moving home to go to BHU, the same school Sebastian Crowe attends, plays football and where they'll finally be face to face almost everyday after walking away two years ago. I was IN this story immediately. But this story is SO MUCH MORE than that. This is a seriously complex storyline that grows heavier with each passing page, becomes so much more than just a forbidden romance. It becomes something so much heavier, so much more heartbreaking, a story full of lies and deceit and impossibility. I was absolutely gripped by this story, by each new twist and turn. I both hated and dreaded where it was going, yet I turned each page hungrily. I couldn't look away.

“Here’s to impossible relationships,” she says. “And to love always being bigger than our mistakes.”

Each standalone in this series follows a different Blackhawk football player and a romance that is typically paved with tragedy, uncertainty and heartbreak. Lexi Ryan brings her A-game to every single story, pulling and pushing the reader to their emotional limits with what these characters have gone through. Loss. Addiction. Death. Betrayal. Forgiveness. Redemption. Love. Going Under is no different, with Alexandra and Sebastian navigating such a heavy, tragic course as they struggle with their past, their promises, their scars. But this book... THIS BOOK... truly gut punched me in ways I both loved and hated. I love a well-written story that delivers romance, sensuality, and emotional hits that tug at the heart strings. But this story pushed me to the limits, making me feel things I didn't want to feel, things my heart just didn't want to accept. It is hard to read, this book. It's also WHY I read, this book. Going Under is beautiful and sexy and riveting. It's also suspenseful, dark, and painfully tragic. It's a masterfully woven story that just blew me away. If you have not read the previous books in this series yet, you should RUN, don't walk. This is a MUST read series by a MUST read author. And Going Under is the best one yet!

 Jessica's Rating:

“I don’t want you to think you need to do this now that I’m back.”

He steps forward, close enough that I can feel his heat. “Do what?”

“Spend time with me. Come to my rescue. Make sure I make it home safely.” I wave a hand. “All of it. You don’t owe me anything.”

“You think I’m here out of a sense of obligation?” He laughs. “Fuck, that’s insane.”

“Is it? Can we just talk about the elephant in the room?” I ask him.

He’s staring at me, and it takes a few beats for him to process that I’ve spoken. I’d laugh if seeing him drunk didn’t also unsettle something deep inside me, some old part of me that still wants Sebastian to be my rock. But I’m not the girl recovering in the hospital anymore. I’m not the girl crying at her sister’s grave. Those experiences are part of who I am now, but I’m more, too. I’m stronger. I don’t need Sebastian’s strength to hold me steady. Or I shouldn’t.

I tuck my hands into my pockets. “Two years ago, the night before I left for Colorado…” He goes still, and I can’t make myself finish the sentence.

“I crossed a line,” he says.

I snort. God, the problem isn’t that he crossed a line—it’s that he didn’t. “Are you serious right now?”

He cuts his eyes to me again, the muscle ticking in his jaw. “It was a mistake, and you’re obviously still angry with me about it.”

I step away from him and wrap my hands around the porch rail. If I let myself look at him, I’ll overanalyze every expression that crosses his face. I realize I’m holding my breath and exhale. “It was a shitty thing for you to do.”

He’s silent for several heavy beats of my heart. When I can’t stand the silence anymore, I release the railing and turn to face him. “Let me make sure I understand,” he says. “Since I almost kissed you two years ago, I can’t walk you home anymore?”

“I don’t want…” I take a breath as I search for the words to explain how this makes me feel. “I don’t want a pity friendship.”

“What the fuck is a pity friendship?”

“It’s when you spend time with someone because you don’t want them to be alone.”

“You’re an expert on what I want now?”

“I think you made it perfectly clear what you do and don’t want from me two years ago.”

He takes half a step forward, and his gaze drops to my mouth. Can you feel someone looking at your lips? Because his gaze is so intense on my mouth right now that I’m sure I could close my eyes and still feel it as distinctly as a touch. “Dammit, Alex, if I’d have known you’d hold such a grudge for thirty seconds of weakness, I would have kissed you that night. Fuck my better judgment. At least then I’d know how you taste.”

I swallow hard and tell my pounding heart not to make more of this than it is. “You’re drunk, Sebastian.”

Stepping back, he drags a hand over his face. “Yeah.” He takes another step back. “Good night, Alex.”

I unlock the door and go inside, shutting it behind me without looking at him again. Slowly, I take the stairs up to my old room, close the door behind me, and lean against it. Only then do I allow myself to squeeze my eyes shut and take a long, deep breath to calm my racing heart.

His words replay in my head, making the muscles in my stomach grow tight. Just once I’d like Sebastian Crowe to make good on one of the fantasies he inspires. Just once I’d like him to follow me into this room and lock the door before pushing me against it and lowering his mouth to mine. I’d like to feel those rough hands slide under my shirt to unbutton my jeans…

I pull out my phone and text Bailey, letting her know I made it home okay. Then, without washing my face or changing my clothes, I fall into bed, close my eyes, and break a promise to myself by fantasizing about Sebastian Crowe.

“At least then I’d know how you taste.”

REVIEW OF MY #1 MOST FAVORITE AUTHORS NEW RELEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOMANIZER BY KATY EVANS!!! **SWOON**

Title: Womanizer
Series: Manwhore Series Stand-alone
Author: Katy Evans
Release Date: December 5, 2016!
PURCHASE HERE:

SYNOPSIS:
From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Katy Evans comes a brand new contemporary romance. WOMANIZER is a full length standalone, and no other books in the series need to be read.
You've seen the headlines: Womanizing billionaire player! Watch out! Stay away!
We were just two strangers. Facing a forbidden attraction, a chemical connection. Neither of us expected or wanted it to amount to more.
But I had never been drawn to a guy the way I was drawn to this one: my brother's best friend, and CEO of the company where I interned.
Even knowing I should stay away, I proved to be too human, after all.
The chemistry was amazing.
The laughs were incredible.
I opened up to him in more ways than I'd opened up to anyone before.
But sex was as far as I'd go.
Just sex because he was too irresistible.
Just sex because I wouldn't be falling for him.
Just sex because I'd leave in three months, and I'd like for my brother not to kill me, and for nobody to find out he was my wicked little secret.
He wasn't the One.
He was just a womanizer.
But for a time, he would be mine.
PURCHASE HERE:
I can't get enough of Katy Evan's reads. Ever. I swear, if she gave me a new book every single month, forever, and ever, and ever, and everrrrrrrr, amen, I would be the happiest little reading bee who ever lived. I am obsessively in love with her words. And I feel like I've been looking forward to Womanizer for MONTHS.

MONTHS.
AND MONTHS.
AND MONTHS!!!!!!!!!!

From the moment I saw the cover, to the second I read the utterly awesome blurb, I needed this book on my Kindle. Callan Carmichael has always felt like an open page to me. Obviously, we've met him before in the Manwhore Series with Malcolm Saint, and in Ladies Man with Tahoe Roth, but for the most part he was a fresh canvas where anything could happen. He maintained this alluring, mysterious air that I so very, very intrigued by.

Callan's part of the trio of sexiest bachelors in Chicago (Well, was apart of it. With Malcom and Tahoe now out of the lady loving game, Callan's alone). The world is at his fingertips, and he wants for absolutely nothing. He's known as a ruthless man in business and a womanizer in bed. Callan works hard but plays even harder! That is... Until sweet Olivia Roth stops him in his tracks and makes him rethink everything.

Olivia is Tahoe's (Callan's best friend) little sister. We meet her briefly in Ladies Man. She's sweet and outgoing with this air of innocence that's down right refreshing. I absolutely love the way Katy reveals her main characters to us. There is always this vulnerability that shines that makes her leading ladies so relatable.

Olivia is no different.
She's trying to make her way in the world.
Trying to prove herself.
And while doing that, she secures an internship at Carma, Callan's empire, for the summer.

Callan and Olivia's first meeting is so damn sweet **shivers**. I was swooning from their first exchange. These two have an instant connection. Callan is drawn to Livvy's sweetness and innocence and Livvy is drawn to Callan's alpha attitude and sexy dominance. These two are cataclysmic, they burn the pages of your kindle and make your thighs tingle.

It's hot.

HOTTT
HOTTER
HOTTEST!!!!!!!

I actually really think this might be Katy's hottest book to date. There is no shortage of steamy scenes. Intoxicating. So steamy I was left fanning myself.

Womanizer is the perfect STAND-ALONE novel. You do NOT have to read any books before this. It's written in a way that it feels like it could be the first of the series. Overall, I LOVED it. There's never anything bad I can say about a Katy Evans read.

She's my favorite.
Will always be my favorite.
And Callan was another perfect addition to a series that just couldn't get any more perfect.

5 stars!

REVIEW + EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY: FIRE IN YOU BY J. LYNN!!!!!!!!!

Title: Fire In You
Series: Wait For You, Bk #6
Author: J. Lynn
Release Date: November 28, 2016
PURCHASE HERE:

SYNOPSIS:
From the # 1 New York Times and International bestselling author comes a richly moving story about heartbreak and guilt, second chances and hope. Full of familiar, fan-favorite characters and no two people more deserving of a happy ending, Fire In You will burn bright beyond the last page…
Jillian Lima’s whole world was destroyed in a span of a few hours. The same night her childhood love, Brock ‘the Beast’ Mitchell, broke her heart, her life was irrevocably altered by the hand of a stranger with a gun. It takes six years to slowly glue together the shattered pieces of her life, but Jillian is finally ready to stop existing in a past full of pain and regret. She takes a job at her father’s martial arts Academy and she’s going out on her first date since a failed relationship that was more yuck than yum. Jillian is determined to start living.
She just never expected Brock to be a part of her life again. But he’s firmly back in her life before she knows it, and not only is he older, he’s impossibly more handsome, more teasing and more everything. And when he sees Jillian, he’s no longer capable of thinking of her as the little girl who was his shadow growing up or the daughter of the man who gave him a second chance at life. He sees the woman who’d always been there for him, the one person who believed in him no matter what.
Brock knows she’s the one he should’ve made his, and what begins as a tentative friendship quickly turns to red-hot chemistry that sparks a flame that burns brighter than lust. Falling for Brock again risks more than her heart, because when the sorrow-filled and guilt-ridden past resurfaces, and a web of lies threatens to rip them apart, the fallout could lay waste to everything they’ve fought to build together, and destroy the dreams of those they care most about.
PURCHASE HERE:
Jillian Lima was Brock Mitchell's shadow for years, quietly longing for him, patiently waiting for him to see her the way she had always seen him. Despite what her friends warned her of and regardless of the way Brock consistently overlooked her, Jillian never let go of the hope that Brock might return her feelings. But she'd misread the signs all along and on the same night Brock broke her young heart for the last time, Jillian faced the most horrific moment of her life. Now, 6 years later, Jillian and Brock are reunited by the family business that brought them together in the first place. Navigating an unexpected working relationship, the two try to be friends. But, of course, this second chance at friendship is messy and unpredictable and rife with the signature angst Jennifer Armentrout has woven throughout this entire series.

I think Brock and Jillian may have been mentioned briefly in a previous book, but I had long forgotten who they were when I started reading Fire In You. And maybe that made this reading experience even better, going in blind, because I turned these pages hungrily as I got to know them for what felt like the first time. Brock is a former MMA fighter and Jillian is the daughter of the gym owner that first gave Brock a chance. This new dynamic between them as boss and assistant is so fresh, so addictive. I was as eager to see where they were going as I was to understand where they'd been. Armentrout slowly unearths the past through perfectly placed flashbacks revealing everything that lead them both to this place at just the right time. And the timing in this book is everything.

Jillian broke my heart a bit with how much she was made to question everything. Her insecurities really drive this storyline painfully and perfectly. She had misread Brock's feelings when they were young, so now she second guesses every word, every look, every blatant flirtation, believing she'll only get hurt again, believing Brock can't possibly see her as anything other than the way he always had. It's such an honest human reaction considering what she's been through and I connected with her right from the start because of it. Jillian is such a real character and I really loved her. And while I loved Brock too, HARD, I was staunchly on Team Jillian in that I couldn't quite forgive him for how he'd overlooked her years ago. I wanted him to fight. I wanted him to really deliver a solid case for why he deserved a shot now when he had broken her heart so severely years prior. I wanted to understand who he was and why he broke her heart and I wanted him to earn her, to be good enough for her this time around.

There were moments in this book that made my heart feel like it was going to just pound right out of my chest. Memories so heartbreaking, moments too real, moments of rejection and frustration and longing that cut so sharply, I couldn't breathe. This story hurts but it's also a story that'll make your heart warm, will bring you hope, will fill you with sheer bliss. Fire in You is everything I love in a good romance... It's sexy, it's swoony, it's slow burning, but it cuts really deep at times and i just love that. I love the pain as much as I love the joy and Jennifer Armentrout delivers both in droves. This isn't just a fantastic story, it's also a really fantastic way to say goodbye to every character we've been introduced to in this series. This series of interconnected stand-alones has honestly given me some of the most memorable characters in romance I've ever read. And Brock and Jillian are now firmly on that list as two characters I'll never, ever forget.

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” I gasped.

Brock’s eyes widened and then he threw back his head, laughing loudly and freely. “Ms. Lima, language.”

My face turned blood red. Did he seriously just say that to me?

Andre’s smile was a bit sly as he eyed the both of us, and I knew—I just knew—he was fully aware of the fact I had no idea Brock was going to be here. Just like my mother had to have known and just like my father had failed to mention.

My family was a bunch of assholes.

“Okay, I’m going to go—uh, pretend to do something,” Andre said.

Brock’s brown eyes were trained on me as he stepped aside and clapped the shorter man on the shoulder.

“Good luck,” Andre said to him, and my hands balled into fists.

The half-grin appeared on Brock’s mouth and he waited until Andre had disappeared. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard you use the word ‘fuck’ before.” His gaze flipped to the ceiling. “Well, there was the one time you tripped over your own feet and banged your knees off the pool deck. Pretty sure you yelled ‘fuck’ then.”

“This is not happening,” I murmured, heart thumping heavily in my chest.

“Actually, I think you yelled ‘fuck’ when your uncle Julio caught you trying to sneak out of the house. You remember that, right? You were trying to follow me—”

“You can stop,” I snapped, “with the walk down Fuck Lane.”

That grin increased, spreading into a full smile that caused my stomach to dip. I placed steadying hands on my desk. “Please tell me I’m dreaming right now.”

“If you were dreaming, I’d hope we’d both have less clothes on.”

“What?” My jaw hit the top of the table. Was he flirting with me? Not entirely surprising. If you looked up “flirt” on the internet, I was sure it had a picture of him grinning the panties right off of some chick, so I guessed a fiancĂ©e wasn’t going to change that.

Chuckling, Brock leaned against the door and folded his arms across his broad chest, stretching the material of his white button-down. My gaze dropped. Yep. He was wearing the damn Chucks. “You’re not dreaming, Jillian. I’m the new General Manager and you’re my assistant manager.”

“There is no way,” I said dumbly.

He glanced around, arching a brow. “Is it really that surprising?”

I wanted to scream yes, but I should’ve guessed it the moment I saw Brock Friday night. Anger swept through me. Not only did I feel incredibly stupid for not figuring out Brock was my new boss, I was extremely pissed everyone in my family had basically set me up.

Taking a deep breath, I asked, “Can you give me a second? Please?”

Brock didn’t move for a moment and then he unfolded his arms. “Your wish is my command.”

My fingers curled around the edge of the desk to stop myself from throwing something at him. The moment he stepped out of my office, I hurried to the door and closed it behind him. Storming back to the desk, I pulled my cellphone out of the little slip inside my purse and jabbed my finger on my father’s contact.

He answered on the third ring, his accented voice way too cheery for this time of the morning. “Jillian, my baby girl, are you—”

“Brock is the new General Manager?” I whispered-yelled into the phone.

“You’re at the office already? It’s not even eight-fifteen— Wait, Brock is already there too?” He laughed. “That is surprising.”

“That’s not really important right now.” I took a deep, calming breath. “Brock really is…he’s the GM?”

“I don’t think you really need to ask that question,” he responded. “Especially when you know the answer to it.”

Closing my eyes, I held the phone so tightly I was surprised it didn’t shatter into a million pieces. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Would it have a made a difference?” he asked.

Yes. A thousand times yes, but I didn’t say that. I refused to admit that. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“You’re going to have to ask him that.” There was a pause. “I didn’t offer you this job because I thought you couldn’t handle working with him or that you would be calling me on your first day, thirty minutes before you should even be there.”

Ouch.

“And I’m not saying that to hurt you, hon. You know that. Hurting you is the last thing I’d ever want to do.” There was another gap of silence while I contemplated knocking the computer off my desk with a ninja kick, and then Dad said, “You can do this.”

Then he hung up on me.

From Sand and Ash is a harrowing story of love and faith shrouded in death and despair. Amy Harmon brings together the best and the worst of humanity on these pages, paving this journey with violence and bravery, horror and love. It's a ruthless barrage of emotions, this story, a relentless war between life and death, between good and evil, illustrated exquisitely by an author whose writing prowess knows no bounds. I was torn between eagerly unearthing the twists and turns that would surely come with each turn of the page, and dreading what was to come, dreading this book ending at all. The story of Eva Rosselli and Angelo Bianco is as enchanting as it is chilling. The love they share is forbidden, both by duty and by law. But their attraction, the absolute truth of their lifelong love is a beautiful, palpable thing that consumes the reader despite the horrific circumstances in which that love exists.

I've read many books of the true accounts of holocaust survivors, seen the movies and documentaries, taken classes concentrating on this area of study. But never before have I been made to fall in love with an individual, with a couple, with a family, before I took such a horrific journey with them. To feel as though you know their strength, to get to know their life up until the moment it is stolen away, to know their helplessness in the face of something so unjust and so terrifying, it changes the way you look at the world, to see such atrocities through their eyes. This may be a fictionalized account inspired by true events, but you won't convince my heart Eva and Angelo aren't real. This story weaves it's way under your skin and into your soul so you feel every step of their journey, of their fight, of this miracle. It's both beautiful and tortuous what Amy Harmon does here, but it's so right. It's so important. We don't truly know fear and loss and hopelessness until we take this journey ourselves. Opening this book, turning these pages, moving along with Eva and Angelo is taking the journey ourselves.

This is absolutely a story of survival and love. But, more, From Sand and Ash is a poignant reminder of where we all come from, that no matter where we live or who we pray to or what we believe in, we all come from the same place. We are all made of the same things. We all seek joy, we all look to find purpose. We all love and play and pray and laugh and hope, and we all just want to be understood. Above all else, we just want to be understood. That message screamed at me on every page, in every word. Our world would be such a beautiful, peaceful, harmonious one if we sought to understand each other instead of judging each other for the ways we are different, for the God we pray to, for where each of our trees first took root. The Law of Moses taught me that we should be celebrating our differences instead of being afraid to point them out, to label them. From Sand and Ash takes that sentiment and drives it home in a way that simply can't be ignored. It's a brutal demonstration of what comes when we stop trying to understand each other, when we stop trying to relate, when we take what makes us different and use it as a means to divide us, to hurt each other, to push each other away. We need this message. We need this book. We need this reminder that when we refuse to learn from the past, we are doomed to repeat it.

I'm asked often what book has changed my life. I can't say I've ever had a clear answer. I've read books I've loved, I've read books that have made me see things in ways I never have before, I've read books I'll never forget. But From Sand and Ash is a life changing book. This book will change the way you go forward by forcing you to go back. It'll change your heart, it'll change your mind, it'll make you seek to understand rather than condemn. It'll make you choose to see the good where there seems to be only darkness. It'll remind you that we're all the same where it matters, that we've all come from the same place regardless of where we're going. It'll inspire you to be better.  It'll demand you pay closer attention to the opportunities to do something important. It will humble you, empower you, it'll strengthen your awareness of your world, your history, your place in it. You can't read this book and not come away changed.

From Sand and Ash is a rich work of art, a stunning masterpiece that has moved me, altered me, captivated me.  It'll take your breath away, it'll break your heart in ways it's never been broken before, it'll leave you speechless. I was overcome with so much emotion while reading this brutally beautiful story. I was painfully terrified. I was both angered and uplifted, both defeated and empowered, broken yet healed. These characters, this fictionalized truth swathed in Harmon's unparalleled storytelling and her breathtaking writing style make for an epic story of bravery, love, resilience and loss that is both haunting and heartwarming all at once. As long as I live, I will carry this story with me.
