SYNOPSIS:
Wild Card is a standalone novel and the first book in the North Ridge Trilogy about rough and rugged Canadian mountain men, the Nelson brothers. Canada’s never felt so hot.
She swore she’d never go back home.
She swore she’d never see the man who broke her all those years ago.
But you don’t always get to choose your path.
And sometimes that path is as wild and rugged as the heart.
Rachel Waters thought she saw the last of the small mountain town of North Ridge, British Columbia, when she left six years ago. But while her advertising career blossomed beneath the skyscrapers of Toronto, her mother’s sudden illness has the 26-year old returning to North Ridge to care for her, putting her career on hold while dealing with family secrets, regrets and unresolved goodbyes.
Shane Nelson has always been a bit of a wild card. The youngest of three brothers, Shane’s spent most of his life being underestimated and misunderstood. With his quiet intensity, classic good looks and thoughtful demeanor, he’s an enigma on horseback, managing his father’s sprawling ranch on the slopes of North Ridge.
But while Shane remains the quintessential brooding cowboy, complete with an arsenal of inner demons, all of that changes when Rachel steps back into his life.
She was the girl he pushed away.
Now she’s the girl who wishes she could leave.
Despite the odds, Shane will do everything to convince Rachel he needs a second chance that he doesn’t deserve but when the two of them head off into the wilderness together in search of lost cattle, more than just their hearts are at stake.
Whether it's love or lives on the line, one thing is for sure: always bet on the wild card.

I have so much admiration and appreciation for an author who can surprise me. When you've read dozens upon dozens of books by a single author, it becomes increasingly difficult to be surprised anymore. But Karina Halle remains at the top of a very small list of authors who never fail to give me that moment of pause where I stop to think 'Wow, this is different! She did it again! She went in another completely different direction I never expected and I absolutely love it!' Those were my exact thoughts as I began reading Wild Card, a story that takes place on a cattle ranch in Canada, a beautifully unputdownable story of second chances, wild adventure, and unrelenting love, a story that further cements Karina Halle as one of the most versatile, creative minds I have the pleasure of reading.

This is one of those books that gripped me on the very first page. As the story opened, Shane Nelson is sitting at a local bar, surrounded by regulars, and he's stunned silent to hear his first love is back in town. I can't explain how or why that was so instantly compelling to me, but it had me rapt right away. Immediately I knew I'd be stepping into a small town romance, a story with the potential for a second chance between young lovers whose romance was clearly cut short, a story full of snarky dialogue between townsfolk that made me wish I were bellied up to the bar right along with them. Straight out of the gate I was swept up by the feel of this book. It only took moments for me to knew I'd be completely taken by this man in a cowboy hat, a man lost in the memories of the past, a hard-working man clearly admired for his devotion to his land, his town and his family, a man who so obviously loves his ranch as wildly as he loves the one that got away.

Halle is the first author I think of when I want to be carried away to a new location and made to feel and smell and see all the sights of a land I'm so unfamiliar with. I'm an indoor girl stepping into the great outdoors on this particular adventure, and in true Karina Halle fashion, the reader is made to breathe in as much emotion as they are of the breathtaking location the story is set in. Wild Card is as much a love story between Shane and Rachel as it is a love story between Shane and his home. It's very much an adventures of the heart, a lesson in the power of love, but it's undeniably an exciting, unpredictable testament to the power of nature, an ode to the Canadian wilderness, to the unpredictable land both respected and feared by the people who know it so well.

I can't even tell you how much I loved this book. I never thought I'd fall so deeply in love with a romance set on a ranch, with a cowboy on the cover, where the sweat and dirt is as plentiful as the romance within its pages. But I did. I fell so hard for this beautifully unforgettable story, a story unlike anything else this author has written, an emotionally tumultuous, blissfully romantic story of longing and second chances. This story is a relentless barrage of emotion on every single page. The broken romance between Shane and Rachel is enough to captivate the reader all by itself, but when you throw in flashbacks of horrific memories from the past, the wild forces of nature, the tattered bonds between family, the palpable suffering of broken hearts, the secondary characters you can't help but adore, or how unbelievably sexy the story is, you end up with a book that is EVERYTHING I could ever want as a reader. Wild Card is a sexy, emotional, completely enthralling love story from cover to cover, a heart-stopping page turner that I wish I could read again for the first time. I'm wildly in love with this book, I couldn't put it down, and I CAN NOT WAIT for more of the North Ridge series.

NEW REVIEW + EXCERPT: ROYALLY ENDOWED BY EMMA CHASE!!

Title: Royally Endowed
Series: Bk #3 - The Royally Series
Author: Emma Chase
Release Date: August 14, 2017
PURCHASE HERE:

SYNOPSIS:
Logan St. James is a smoldering, sexy beast. Sure, he can be a little broody at times—but Ellie Hammond’s willing to overlook that. Because, have you seen him??
Sexy. As. Hell.
And Ellie’s perky enough for both of them.
For years, she’s had a crush on the intense, protective royal security guard—but she doesn’t think he ever saw her, not really.
To Logan, Ellie was just part of the job—a relative of the royal family he’d sworn to protect. Now, at 22 years old and fresh out of college, she’s determined to put aside her X-rated dreams of pat-downs and pillow talk, and find a real life happily ever after.
The Queen of Wessco encourages Ellie to follow in her sister’s footsteps and settle down with a prince of her own. Or a duke, a marquis…a viscount would also do nicely.
But in the pursuit of a fairy tale ending, Ellie learns that the sweetest crushes can be the hardest to let go.
***
Logan St. James grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, in a family on the wrong side of the law. But these days, he covers his tattoos and scars with a respectable suit. He’s handsome, loyal, brave, skilled with his hands and…other body parts.
Any woman would be proud to bring him home to her family.
But there’s only one woman he wants.
For years he’s watched over her, protected her, held her hair back when she was sick, taught her how to throw a punch, and spot a liar.
He dreams of her. Would lay down his life for her.
But beautiful Ellie Hammond’s off-limits.
Everybody knows the bodyguard rules: Never lose focus, never let them out of your sight, and never, ever fall in love.

"The princess’s sister and the East Amboy bodyguard don’t make sense— we’ll never last."

I couldn't get enough of this freaking book. It's just TOO GOOD. Emma Chase does good romance, she does good Rom Com, she does good steam. And here with Ellie and Logan's story, she does damn good slow burn. What's between these characters is a bit forbidden, a bit unorthodox. The notion that a lowly palace guard could possibly end up with a woman who's essentially become a member of the royal family, even if it is just by marriage, is deemed an impossible match in the eyes of tradition. Ellie is the sister-in-law of Prince Nicholas of Pembrook. Logan is the trusted guard charged with protecting her. He's witnessed her wild antics, her moments of despair. She sees him as her hero, an untouchable constant she secretly pines after. Their sexual tension is off-the-charts, their friendship is as sweet as it is dependable. And watching them circumnavigate their unwanted feelings is so addictively tortuous, deliciously emotional, and so freaking intoxicating. I loved every single second.

"...knowing he’s here, watching over us like a powerful, invincible guardian angel, settles my nerves and, like always, makes me feel safe and cared for. Because Logan would never let anything bad happen to any of us. And I believe with all my heart that there’s nothing he can’t do."

I've loved these royal boys, these defiant princes torn between duty to their country and desire for women who don't quite fit in with what tradition demands of them. But I have to say, as much as I thought I was taken by Prince Nicholas and Prince Henry, they don't hold a candle to all I felt for Logan St. James, their royal bodyguard. Logan is, hands down, my FAVORITE hero of this series. Like the royal princes, Logan is chained by his own sense of duty, forbidden to dip into a dating pool he's not suited for. With his stoicism, his loyalty, his need to protect, Logan is a delectable force and he completely melted me with his boyish smirks and that damn accent that I swear could hear in my dreams. He's the kind of hero you wish were real because he's just too irresistible not to want him for yourself. I. JUST. LOVED. HIM.

"I promised her. I swore I would keep her safe. Be her guard, her wall, so she could fly free. And I will not fucking fail her."

Royally Endowed is ALL THE THINGS. It's perfectly paced, consuming the reader with a complex dynamic between a girl who finds herself suddenly royal and the man who keeps her safe. The longing and the unrequited attraction she feels for him, their snarky banter and their growing friendship, his refusal to look at her as anything but the sister-in-law of his Prince... It's all just too freaking good. A blissfully romantic story layered with complicated emotion, lush sensuality, and a heart-wrenching forbidden attraction set against the backdrop of palaces and crowns and tradition... YES PLEASE!!! Royally Endowed is the most perfect book in this series and I don't say that lightly. I've LOVED every book in this series HARD. But Logan and Ellie are just on another level, the perfect storm, two characters that I loved individually with every fiber of my being, but together they are explosive and beautiful and I wanted them to happen so badly.

"Somebody once told me a slow-burning fire is the hottest— and it must be true. Because Logan and I are a fucking inferno."

I never wanted this book to end. Everything from Emma Chase's mesmerizing writing style to this unforgettable, royally romantic storyline was PERFECTION. There are moments in this book that sliced my heart wide open, scenes I never saw coming that almost gutted me, words so exquisitely romantic they took my breath away. The chemistry, the attraction, the dialogue between these characters who are too right and too wrong for each other, I seriously couldn't get enough. Royally Endowed is so much fun to read, so incredibly sexy, so well done, so utterly unputdownable. This is absolutely my favorite book in this series, it's one of my absolute favorite books from this author and it's easily one of the best freaking books I've read this year.

Ellie

But then the mood shifts, as if the air becomes thicker, weighted, more . . . sultry.

Because slowly, Logan sinks down to one knee in front of me—looking in my eyes the whole time. In this position, I could touch his shoulders, comb my fingers through his thick, dark hair. He’s the perfect height for me to bend down and kiss his mouth—the perfect height for him to kiss me back . . . in a lot of places.

My breath hitches. And I wonder he feels it too.

There’s a sound of tearing Velcro, and Logan takes something off his ankle—a holster, with a small silver knife, about three inches long.

“Keep this on you all the time,” he says seriously. “Just in case. If you wear a skirt, the strap will fit around your thigh.”

And I almost laugh. Most girls get a ring from a guy on his knees. I get a murder weapon. But still, it makes me feel safe . . . watched over. Like I’m something precious that deserves to be protected.

I take the knife from him, testing the surprisingly solid, heavy weight of it in my hand. I press my index finger to the tip.

Logan grabs my wrist tightly. “Careful. It’s sharp.”

There’s a small, painless nick, a tiny bead of blood, so I put my finger in my mouth, sucking.

And Logan’s watching me again.

Watching my mouth.

His chest seems to rise just a little faster, and his throat ripples when he swallows. He bends his head, curves his strong back, and then I feel his hands on my ankle, securing the strap. His touch is warm and self-assured. It’s the way he always moves—confident and experienced. Logan knows his body and he knows how to use it, in every way possible.

I almost moan. The sound is in the back of my throat, but I keep it trapped. I never knew the ankle was an erogenous zone, but it sure as hell is now. A hot pulse of pleasure streaks from Logan’s fingers on my bare skin, up my thigh, between my legs.

And I throb there, growing swollen and heavy as he keeps his hands on me.

Can he tell? Does he know? He’s so aware of everything, always so attuned, I wonder if he can sense my arousal . . . feel it in the air that clings between us.

PURCHASE HERE:
I'm an absolute glutton for taboo storylines, for forbidden romances between characters who are so wrong and yet so perfectly right for each other. Maybe that's why this story gripped me right out of the gate. Or maybe it was simply Jodi Ellen Malpas' mesmerizing storytelling and lush writing style that swept me away. Whatever it was, The Forbidden had me completely consumed the ENTIRE way through. All the reasons many readers will avoid this story are the exact same reasons it pulled me in and never let me go. This book certainly won't be for everyone, this storyline will scare off many readers. But for a reader like myself who enters into books hoping to find them loaded with angst and complex emotion, to be as infuriated and anxious and uncomfortable while reading as I am overjoyed and hopeful, this book is EXACTLY my cup of tea.

I love a forbidden romance. I love a messy story that sucker punches the reader with the unexpected. I love a book where the reader is made to see rightness amidst wrongness and completely embrace all the forbidden things we're told we shouldn't. I love a book that is equal parts heartache and hope, a story that keeps the reader on that tenuous line between contentment and unease. I love anything that makes me feel, both good and bad emotions, from maddening fury to blissful romance and everything in between. With perfectly timed curveballs and exquisitely paced drama, The Forbidden is all of those things and so much more... which is why, to my great surprise, this book turned out to be my absolute favorite from this author since she first gave me Jesse Ward.

Truly, The Forbidden felt like a complete 180 from anything Jodi Ellen Malpas has delivered yet. This story felt more emotional, more relatable, more subdued in it's romanticism. It's not an in-your-face loud kind of love story like This Man. In fact, Jack is a far cry from any of JEM's other heroes. He's not a man who tramples. He's not a man who steamrolls in and demands things. He's sexy in a more reserved way, a character who's a bit broken, definitely sweeter, more romantic in many ways despite the devastating circumstances he and his love interest find themselves immersed in. This book is just different. The Forbidden, in all its deception and all its ruthless heartache, felt like such a refreshing change from anything this author has written before and I not only appreciated it, I adored it.

I devoured The Forbidden in a day. I know this storyline will scare people away, but I hope readers will allow themselves to take a chance. Step outside the box and allow this story to sweep you away in its wrongness. You might just discover that wrong never felt as right as it does here in this book.

Jessica's Rating:

“Thank you for your help,” I say quietly, studying him, definitely detecting that he’s deep in thought. Don’t ask, don’t ask, don’t ask. I need to get back into my apartment without engaging with him, which could prove tricky when he’s blocking the doorway and looking like he has no intention of shifting to let me in.
“Annie,” he breathes. “I’m struggling so badly.”
“I’m not doing this.” I swallow, pushing my way past him. He grabs me by the top of my arm and holds me in place. “Let me go, Jack.”
“I’ve already told you I can’t do that. Annie, I’m drowning here. I’m going out of my mind, and the more time I spend with you the fucking worse it’s getting. Listening to you, talking to you, sharing a passion with you that goes way beyond the amazing time we had in bed together.”
“You have to forget!” I yell, knowing anger is the only way forward. Be angry with him. Let it dominate me and rule me, because the alternative scares me to fucking death.
He pushes me into the hall and slams the door behind us, forcing me to back up. “No,” he says, straight and even. “No,” he repeats, moving one more step forward, except this time I don’t retreat. Because I can’t. Because he has me locked in place with those grey eyes, and now they’re back to their full glory. Sparkling, even if it’s with anger. He reaches for his shirt and starts unbuttoning it before shrugging it off and throwing it to the floor, revealing the chest that’s haunting me.
I quickly look down at the pile of material, my mind reeling. His chest. His perfect damn chest. “What are you doing?”
“I have no fucking idea.” He reaches for me and slides a hand around my neck, pulling me to him. Our chests meet, and my determination to repel him vanishes under our connection. Wrongs turn into rights. Conflict turns into craving.
“I can’t get you out of my head, Annie.” His forehead meets mine, his palm massaging away the tightness in my neck muscles, softening me up until I relax in his hold. “I want you all over again, and I can’t even find the will to worry about how much more that’ll make me want you.” He breathes down on me. “I’ve played that night on repeat. I’ve dreamed of holding you in my arms again. I’ve craved the sound of your voice, the feel of your touch, the softness of your lips on mine. I know I shouldn’t want you. But I do. Nothing has ever made me feel this insane with need. Nothing has taken up so much space in my head. I can’t fucking help it, Annie.” His grey gaze sinks into me, my heart steadying to an even thrum. His head starts to shake mildly, his splayed hand moving up to the back of my head and fisting my hair. “I don’t want to help it,” he growls. “I want you. I don’t care how wrong it is.” His clenched fist tightens, gripping my hair harshly. “I know I’ve been on your mind since I fucked you every which way in that hotel room. Stop denying it. Don’t insult me and tell me you don’t crave that amazing feeling all over again. I can see it in your eyes every damn time I look into them. You. Want. Me.”
It’s me who moves in first. All me. I lunge forward and smash my lips to his, the magnetic force winning. His words winning. Jack winning. My heart winning. I coax his mouth open with hard, hungry kisses. I’ve lost my mind to a craving too powerful to fight off. And, like Jack, I don’t care how wrong it is.
Lost.
Yet as he walks me backward until my back slams into the wall, I feel found again.
I cry out, and Jack moans. We’re clumsy and desperate. He’s pushing me up the wall with the force of his kiss, then he’s rolling away, taking me with him until it’s his back slamming into the wall. It’s the elevator all over again. The atmosphere is sizzling. I’m on fire. He scoops me up, pinning me to him, and carries me into my bedroom. I focus on him. Only him and the return of feelings that I’ve fantasized about since that unforgettable night. All the guilt is abandoning me, and I let it, unprepared to let anything stop me from taking the forbidden.

I can't even handle how good this book was. The Bourbon Kings saga has been a beautifully addictive, deliciously scandalous, emotionally tortuous but altogether unforgettable journey from beginning to end. This finale was not only one of my most anticipated reads of 2017, it turned out to be exponentially better than anything I could've imagined. Hands down, Devil's Cut is the best book of this series, a series, mind you, I already loved beyond words. I couldn't put this book down. I never wanted it to end. I could read about the Bradford Baldwine family, their floundering bourbon company, their troublesome relationships and their haunting family secrets forever and I'd never, ever tire of any of it. From beginning to bittersweet end, this entertaining, exciting, suspenseful family drama has CONSUMED me and the reality that it's reached the end is one I'm not yet willing to accept.

I can't tell you how many cups of coffee went cold as I read this book. I imagine I looked like some kind of wide-eyed crazy person as I read, clutching the book with white knuckles, turning pages hungrily as the twists and turns of Devil's Cut completely captivated me. I simply could not tear myself away. The way JR Ward laid out this story, from The Bourbon Kings through The Angels Share right up to the very last page of Devil's Cut, creating an intricately woven, fully immersive, sweeping story, was just BRILLIANT. And to my utter delight, this finale was everything I could've ever hoped for and so much I never expected. It was so satisfying, this ending, so full of surprises and heartache and healing and hope. It's truly the PERFECT finale to a wholly unforgettable series.

I was beyond lost in this story, this family, these characters, the scandal, the secrets, the suspense, the love and hope and heart stopping memories... ALL. OF. IT. I couldn't get enough. There's truly nothing I can say that will do this book justice. I'm not a reader that needs my books adapted onto a screen, but I will pray everyday that this saga comes to life. It already has, truthfully. The manner in which Ward breathes so much life into these pages, squeezing out exquisite emotion and illustrating such lush imagery on every page, it plays out in my mind as clear as if I were watching it happen before me. This family in all of their dysfunction and all of their shared heartache captured me within the snare of their bonds and I never want to be let go.

There isn't a more perfect way this series could've ended. Devil's Cut fills in every hole, turns over every stone, answers every question, heals every single open wound left throughout the series. I felt everything a reader can feel in these pages. Ward carries her reader through the intricately woven storylines of each of the characters in this vast ensemble and she ensures her reader feels every thing they feel. Despair. Heartache. Hope. Fear. Joy. Devastation. Loss. Fury. Contentment. Every single emotion a reader can feel is demanded of them in this book. Devil's Cut had my chin on the floor at times, had my eyes filled with tears (both from sadness and utter joy), had my heart leaping with joy just as often as it pounded relentlessly through agonizing memories and heartbreaking longing. This is a series I'll reread and I'll do it often. This is a series I'll never forget. This is a series I never wanted to end but I'm so over the moon with how it did. Devil's Cut is the most superb ending to a PHENOMENAL series and there simply aren't enough words to adequately express how much I absolutely, wholeheartedly LOVED it.

Racer McKay is a broody bastard.
From the moment I met him, he’s been rude, irritable, and unbearable. And worse? He's broke.
A contractor working to remodel my parents pool house for extra cash, he stomps around in those clunky construction boots with his tool belt wrapped around his narrow waist, and a chip on his shoulder.
Racer McKay is also infuriatingly . . . sexy as hell. I want to take that pencil tucked behind his ear, and draw lazy lines slowly up and down his body all the while wanting to strangle him at the same time.
We try to stay out of each other’s way . . . that is until I have no other option but to ask for his help.
But what I don’t realize is he needs me just as much as I need him. I have money he’s desperate for, and he holds the key to making my dreams come true.
Our pranks turn from sarcastic banter, to sexual tension and lust-filled glances. Bickering matches quickly morph into slow burn moments. We’re hot, we’re cold. We push and pull. I need him, I don’t want him. We’re on the verge of combusting with an agreement dangling dangerously between us. Chapter One

RACER

Why is it so goddamn drafty in here? I grip my hammer in my hand, my tool belt riding low on my hips, and my stereotypical construction hat rests on my head as I finish up the project I was hired to do.

Taking a quick look around, I search the bedroom, looking for an open window or AC vent that’s blowing a cold breeze right against my dick and sac, making it almost impossible to look semi-decent in this scrap of fabric.

“Mmm, I think you forgot a nail on the ground over there,” says the throaty, smoke-filled voice of Mrs. Sage, who is lying across her chaise lounge, wearing a silky pink robe that is barely tied around her waist. She makes it her mission to show me as much skin as possible, and as we’re talking about skin showing . . .

I bend down to pick up the nail she’s pointing at as the thin strip of man thong material rides higher up my ass crack than I care to admit.

Let’s pause for a second.

Are you wondering to yourself, is Racer really wearing a man thong as he finishes building a solid oak shelf?

The answer is yes. Yes, I am.

I’m Racer McKay, and I wear man thongs for older, rich women while I work on simple projects around their houses. Excuse me, I mean mansions.

Don’t worry. Yes, I’m also very much ashamed to admit the level I’ve stooped to in order to make some cash. I have my pride, but right now, when I’m offered three hundred dollars more to build a shelf in a man thong, I’m choosing to seize the opportunity.

Self-respect was thrown out the window two years ago when a pile of bills and responsibilities were thrust in my direction without any preparation or warning. Making money is as vital as breathing to me, so I will take it any way I can get it.

Cue the man thong.

“Oh, you’re right. Here it is,” I say, holding up the nail. “Thanks for the help, Mrs. Sage. I would hate to see you hurt yourself from my lack of attention to detail.”

She waves me off and puffs her chest toward me, her robe slipping farther apart, showing the cleavage of a very saggy pair of breasts. I’ve seen my fair share of boobs, and even though I don’t mingle sex with work, I can’t help but want Mrs. Sage to remove the robe just so I can see what she has hidden under the silky fabric.

How saggy are we talking here?

I’m interested for exploratory reasons, for knowledge about every kind of breast out there. Because right now, Mrs. Sage looks like she’s rocking a pair of pancakes that have been flattened by a steamroller.

“You would just have to nurse me back to health if that happened.” Her finger trails up her varicose veined leg to her geriatric hip. I hold back the shiver that wants to spin up my spine.

All I can say is . . . can’t unsee that.

I nervously laugh and tuck my hammer into its holster. “Not much of a nurse, Mrs. Sage. I might hurt you even more.”

“I don’t mind getting hurt.” She starts to spread her legs and that’s when I call it a day.

I turn around quickly, snag my jeans, and slip them up and over my legs, struggling around my tool belt. Once things are in place, I remove my hat, put on my shirt, and cover my hair with a backward baseball cap. The peep show is over.

Once dressed, I gather my tools, tuck my construction hat under my arm, and turn to Mrs. Sage. This is my least favorite part, getting the old bird to pay up.

“Leaving already?” She pouts, lipstick on her teeth.

“Unfortunately, I have another engagement I’m running late for.” A lie, but it’s the only way I know to get out of here.

“That’s a shame. I really should book you for a whole day. That way you can’t skirt out of here earlier than I’m ready for.”

She walks out of the den and into the entryway where she opens her purse and pulls out a wad of one-hundred-dollar bills. My brain explodes from the amount of cash in her purse, as if it’s chump change she’s ready to throw around at a parade dedicated to her and her riches.

“What do I owe you? Six hundred?”

Fuck, it’s five hundred, and if I wasn’t a nice guy, I wouldn’t correct her, but I believe in good karma. Especially considering where my bad luck has gotten me—trying to climb my way out of a large debt. I try to put as many good vibes out in the world as possible.

“We actually agreed upon five hundred, Mrs. Sage.”

“Such a bargain.” She flips through her cash, pulls out five bills—damn—and hands them over to me. “Shall I call for my next project?”

I pocket the cash. “Email is best, Mrs. Sage. I always feel awkward taking phone calls at work.”

“Such a hard worker.” She pats my face and leans forward, lips puckered, but I step to the side avoiding an attack from her old-lady lips.

As I depart, I wave my hand in the air and say, “Thanks, Mrs. Sage. I look forward to your next email.”

Out of her reach, I toss my tools in the back of my truck, enter the cab, and place my hands on the steering wheel as I exhale a long pent-up breath.

My boys, Smalls and Tucker, can never hear about today’s side job. There is no way they’ll let me live it down if they knew. I know my two best friends—who I’ve been working with in construction for the last few years—have never had to put on a man thong and bend over for a client multiple times. And hell, if they found out I do—on occasion—I think they would question my sanity.

Although, they’re aware of my struggles and try to help out where they can. Tucker, technically my boss, tries to schedule me as much as possible, but sometimes it doesn’t feel like enough.

From the center console of my beat-up truck, I pull out my phone and see three text messages.

Tucker: At the House of Reardon with Smalls. Come have a drink.

Smalls: Get your ass here.

Adalyn: Have you ever smelled burning skin before? It’s nasty.

I chuckle at the last message. I head toward the bar where Tucker and Smalls are hanging out and do voice text back to Adalyn.

“Try to avoid burning skin, especially on the worksite. I’m taking it you’ve had a fun shift at work today?”

Adalyn is one of my best friends as well. I met her through Tucker’s fiancée, Emma. We spent one night together hanging out and we’ve been inseparable ever since. And before your mind starts racing a mile a minute about how we’re going to get married and have little Radalyn babies, I’m going to cut you off right there. There is nothing going on between us. As Adalyn very honestly told me one night, she has no interest in starting any type of relationship with me since I’m not her type. Although, she said if I want to hang out with my shirt off it would be no problem with her. Such a horny little minx.

My phone rings in my hand. I put it on speaker.

“Addie sweetie pie snookum face.”

“Racee pacey penis breath.” God, I love her humor.

“What have we talked about?” I turn onto a main road, feeling a little more at ease knowing there is a beer in my near future.

“I can call you nicknames just not penis breath,” she says in a monotone voice.

“Correct. I don’t think that’s all that hard to remember.”

“I know,” she sulks, “but ever since you taught me the insult, I want to use it all the time.”

“Call your mom penis breath.”

“Yeah, great idea. Next time my overprotective mom calls, I’ll be sure to call her penis breath. I’m sure she’ll love it.”

I chuckle. “Maybe it’s what your dad calls her in bed.”

“I hate you. I hate you so much right now.”

I full-on belly laugh, the rumble coming from the pit of my stomach. “You started it, Addie.”

She lets out a long breath. “Note to self, don’t call Racer penis breath ever again.”

“I’m glad you learned your lesson.” I turn onto State Route 17 and head toward The House of Reardon. “So what’s going on, burning skin today at the office?”

“No, but I did watch someone get a mole removed and that smelled like absolute carcass. It was nasty.”

“Why did you want to be a nurse again?”

“I don’t know,” she sighs. “Good benefits?”

“Good benefits? I would have sworn you were doing it for the free latex gloves.”

“Well, there is my latex glove obsession,” she says sarcastically. “Ugh, what are you doing tonight?”

“Getting a drink with the boys down at Reardon. What are you doing? Painting those gnarly toes of yours while drinking an entire bottle of peach schnapps?”

“Close, I’m clipping my toenails for you as a gift and drinking peach schnapps. Expect a package at your front door tomorrow.”

“Aw, you shouldn’t have.” I switch lanes and speed down the highway, the froth of the beer calling my name.

“What did you do today?” Adalyn asks, changing the subject. “Were you with Mrs. Sage again?”

Adalyn is the only one who knows about Mrs. Sage and her “requests.” I had to tell someone and Tucker and Smalls were not an option, given I work with them every day. But Adalyn was a safe second. She’s cool and wouldn’t say anything.

“Yeah,” I huff. “It was extra drafty in her house today.”

“Probably to cool down her old-lady hot flashes. Would she still get those at her age?”

“I don’t know.” I get off the exit, thankful I’m only a few minutes away. “You’re the woman and the nurse; you should know a hell of a lot more about hot flashes than I do.”

“Of course you would say that, sexist.”

“Hey,” I shout, seeing the parking lot straight ahead. “You know I’m the first fucking person to celebrate women and their rights. Forgive me if I don’t quite understand your lady parts and the tubes that float around in your lower half. Do you know the intricacies of the penis?”

“As a matter of fact—”

“Scratch that, wrong person to ask.” I put my truck in park, and I’m about to tell Adalyn I have to go when she starts walking toward me. “Well, hello there, pretty girl.”

She smiles and pockets her phone, ending our conversation. Dressed in her scrubs, she opens my door and says, “You drive like a grandpa. Took you long enough.”

I hop out and wrap my arm around her shoulder. “Crashing the dick party?”

“Can’t resist.”

When we enter the bar, we spot Smalls and Tucker immediately. They have a table off to the side with a pitcher in the middle and a plate of nachos. Thank fuck. I’m starving.

I pull out Adalyn’s chair for her, like the gentleman I am, and then spin my chair around so I’m sitting in it backward. “What’s up, men? Mind if the little lady crashes?”

“Only if she can hold her own,” Smalls says, handing her a cup.

“You know I can.” Adalyn winks and starts filling up our glasses with beer.

I pull a large chip dripping of nacho cheese and jalapenos from the center of the nacho plate and stuff the whole thing in my mouth. Damn, that tastes good.

“Help yourself,” Tucker says. I’m sure that is not sarcasm I hear in his tone.

“Don’t mind if I do. My belly boo was screaming at me for food.”

Tucker is about to take a sip of his beer when he says, “Dude, you’re a six-foot-three, grown-ass man; you can’t say shit like belly boo.”

I shrug his comment off and stuff more nachos in my mouth. Within a minute almost half the plate is gone and I have no regrets.

“Where’s the fiancée?” I ask Tucker.

“She’ll be getting off her shift soon. She’s going to meet me here, and then we’re going out for dinner. She has a bunch of wedding things she wants to talk about.”

“Sounds riveting,” Smalls teases.

“Hey, I will talk whatever kind of wedding stuff she wants to. She’s marrying me, she said yes to me.” He takes a sip of his beer, disbelief in his voice. “I’m one lucky fuck.”

“This is crap. She better talk to me next,” Adalyn huffs and crosses her arms, interrupting the loving moment Tucker was having. “I’ve been asking that girl about her wedding plans for months now, and she keeps blowing me off. Who does that? Someone who’s trying to avoid me, that’s who. I’m going to be her maid of honor, right?” She pokes Tucker. “Tell me I’m her maid of honor. End my misery and let me know.” Tucker says nothing, which only fuels the fire. “Fine, don’t tell me, but if she picks someone else, I swear to the yeast in my beer that I will start slashing tires.” Adalyn stabs the table with her finger, showing us all just how her temper can skyrocket in a second. “All the tires will rue the day Emma didn’t pick me as her maid of honor.” She laughs sardonically and sips her beer while staring Tucker down. “This is all your fault.”

Tucker holds his hands up in defense. “I have no idea what she’s planning. You take that shit up with her . . . and leave my tires alone.”

“Oh, I will take it up with her.” Adalyn bounces her knee up and down, clearly still hyped up. It almost looks like she’s about to explode . . . “Racer wears man thongs while doing his side jobs.”

What the hell?

“Adalyn!” I give her a what the fuck look.

Frazzled, she covers her mouth. “I’m sorry. I needed to change the subject before I started running around the bar tossing drinks in people’s faces.”

“Talk about your fucking burning mole skin. Don’t bring me into this. Christ.” I lift my baseball cap off my head, run my hand through my hair and situate it back on, holding the top for a few seconds.

The table is silent before Smalls taps me on the shoulder. “What?” I snap.

“Are you wearing just the man thong, or is it one of those things where you pull the thong over your jeans to give the ladies a sneak peek?”

“Are we talking lace, silk, or cotton? I would assume cotton for breathability, but then again, I’ve never worn a man thong before,” Tucker adds.

“How many do you have?” Smalls continues. “Do you wear them all the time?”

“Do you have a favorite color?”

“Are we talking thong or G-string? Because that’s a big difference,” Adalyn joins in.

“Huge difference.” Smalls rests his chin on his hand and leans forward, batting his eyelashes as he waits for an answer.

My eyes fixed on Adalyn, I say, “I’m going to kill you.”

She hides her smile and takes another sip of her beer.

She doesn’t know what she just started.

But, oh yeah, she’s going to get it all right.
